This is one Remarque novel that, for my money, could have been inferred in the German language, unpublished here. I continue with the absolutely amazing Erich Maria Remarque and of course with The Black Obelisk examines the period between the two wars. Remarque managed to get us into the atmosphere of post-WW1 Germany, he let the reader understand the ohelisk of Nazism there, showed us that there could be no other way for these people back then.
