I found the stories to still be charming, but maybe three decades passed had cast a too romantic light, raising my expectations to an unrealistic level. Again this book really surprised me, it was very entertaining and extremely fascinating. Mr Tomkins in Wonderland explains Einstein’s theory of relativity.
This classic provides a delightful explanation of the central concepts in physics, from atomic structure to relativity. This was a must read in when I was first introduced to it. His sense of humor is evident in his books and in his scientific career. The book is a blend of these fanciful adventures with straightforward discussions of science.
Physics has never come naturally to me. I recently shared this book with a teen volunteer who was introducing younger kids feorge Einstein’s theories in a class on cosmology.

Later chapters in the books deal with atomic structure Mr Tompkins spends time as a conduction electronreturning to consciousness when he is annihilated in an encounter with a positron and thermodynamics the Professor expounds an analogy between the second law of thermodynamics tompkis the bias towards the casino in gambling before being confounded by a local reversal of the second law through the intervention of Maxwell’s demon who has introduced himself to Maud in one of her dreams.
The fact that it’s somewhat outdated will tompkis that possibility. This is the coolest introduction to Physics out there, I actually read and reviewed it for my final project in my Physics class at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics way back in But he picks up enough interesting impressions to have a vivid dream related to the lecture.

Tompkins does not understand much of what the professor is tompkkns – his skills in mathematics are limited gamoq addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, “of which he uses the first two in his profession”.
I was impressed that such a great scientist as George Gamow could translate the complex and inside out worlds of relativity and quantum mechanics to Joe Public in such a clear and humorous way.
Roger Penrose’s foreword introduces Mr Tompkins to a new generation of readers, and reviews his adventures in the light of current developments in physics today.
