Michel Strogoff ( film) – Wikipedia

The Courier of the Czar French: Michel Strogoff is a novel written by Jules Verne in Critics, including Leonard S. Davidow, consider it one of Verne’s best books. Davidow wrote, jukes Verne has written no better book than this, in fact it is deservedly ranked as one of the most thrilling tales ever written.

The book was later adapted to a play, by Verne himself and Adolphe d’Ennery. The book has been adapted several times for films, television and cartoon series. A wonderful illustrated version of a fantastic odd-book-out odyssey by that idol of our long-forgotten childhoods, Jules Verne. I was six, and it was summertime. Our love made up for that.

So there I was, in her room, as the late afternoon summer sun filtered through the Navajo ,ichel curtains, fatally immersed in the far-flung exploits of this young heroic man, Michel Strogoff, Courier to the Czar! What I could read back then was much not much more than the slow speed of those learned Dick and Jane tomes we got in First Grade. Did these artists know that soon such sentimental painting would be relegated to the dust heap of art history?

They must at least have known in the back of their minds that all great moments eventually vanish – just as the golden moments of my childhood themselves had, alas, an expiry date!

It definitely wasn’t the science fiction genre adventure such as 20, Leagues or Journey to the Centre of the Earth, but this was more one of pure adventure, determination, daring, one of those more true to life tales that you just must keep reading since you are constantly left wondering what will happen next.

Enjoy the Russian adventure Straight adventure novel, no science fiction. Easily one of Verne’s better books, this is an underappreciated gem.

Nadya, the ‘damsel in distress’ is a strong female character. The stalwart Michael must deliver a message from the czar to the governor of Siberia, about treachery afoot.

He journeys through hostile Central Asian territory and is tortured. This is what we used to micnel strictly a “boy’s book” and now, would possibly be considered a Young Adult novel. I am atrogoff I did. While Verne holds strictly to the technology of the time period, he makes the story interesting using natural and artificial obstacles. And, while one will never turn to Verne for deep or compelling characterizations, the leads in this story are understandable as are their actions and reactions. While I cannot speak to the accuracy of his geography and topology, I can say that it was an exciting travelogue. He gives highly detailed examples of each region and town as if he was writing a Lonely Planet verhe from Russia through Siberia.

I remember liking a scene where a carriage gets stuck and disabled it echoed in my mind to a scene written by Bram Stoker and using the river as a passageway. Nice and interesting flourishes.

As for the people, whew! Our hero suffers great physical and mental trials and injuries with a stoicism and determination that makes the Terminator look like a wus. The antagonist is no Fu Manchu or Dr. As a result he commands and personally dishes out pain and suffering no matter how immoral those actions appear to those around him — including his own men.

On the lighter side, the two reporters have an amusing interaction until they finally commit to helping our hero. You can get this book for free from the Gutenberg Project site. In the series of Extraordinary Journeys written by Jules Verne, there are some that introduce important scientific advances, such as “20, Leagues,” “From the Earth to the Moon,” or “Journey to the Center of the Earth”, so these books can be classified as science fiction, a genre in which Jules Verne was one of the precursors. However, the theme of the series is not science fiction, but extraordinary journeys.

Sep 10, Mohsen. A nice straightforward adventure novel, as Michael on a mission for the Czar has to basically travel from one end of Russia to the other before a traitor can give the enemy armies vital information. Michael is stoic to the point of having one facial expression, but he is determined, manly and good to his mother.

His love interest is treated as a bit of a damsel, but proves to be every bit as tough as her boyfriend.
