I don’t think this works for a model of homosexuality in general–I mean, I hope it doesn’t, since it brings us closer to a sort of Alan Blooming sulliva homosexuality than the years between Bloom and Sullivan might seem to suggest.

Especially the Essay ‘If love were all’- Its worth it to re-read. A logical thread leads unobtrusively away from the theme of promiscuity syllivan by Sullivan in his first essay, to the stable homosexual-personality construct of the second, to the sex-free discipline of responsible gay friendship rounding out the third.

We lose control or, rather, we cede control to another, trusting in a way we would never otherwise trust, letting the other person hold the deepest part of our being in their hands, with the capacity to hurt it mortally.

It will give you a new vocabulary for talking about friendship. I’ve had disagreements with friends that I’ve talked to about this, but I do find his Freudian narrative of homosexuality-as-unusual-development to be problematic. Also by Andrew Sullivan. With its paradoxical sense of beauty amid pain, Love Undetectable has something of the quality of a war memoir. Scholarly, impassioned, wide-ranging, and embattled, Love Undetectable is a book that is ultimately not about homosexuality or plague, but about humanity and mortality. They emerge as the foundation of a noble, Aristotle-approved gay culture of friendship.
And he largely succeeds.

Trivia About Love Undetectable Always loved this book. He attended Magdalen College, Oxford, where he took a first in modern history and modern languages.
The description of life in the AIDS epidemic in the pre-cocktail years is very fine, and very informative, as is the description of the day-to-day effects of new medications on AIDS treatment.
